We spend Tuesday through Friday cleaning the boat, inside and out, she is a mess from traveling! We scrub, wash, and polish her. Dave soaks all the lines to get rid of the salt. We also soak and clean all of the canvases and scrub the dinghy. I do laundry, change the bed, and clean the inside of the boat from top to bottom. During our stay, we catch up with lots of old friends and colleagues.
Upon our arrival on Tuesday, we run into Greg Franklin and Jim Gorman who are working to complete the remodel that the bathrooms in the basin have under gone. There have been many changes and improvements since we left last year. We check in with Nadine, the business manager for the Club, and meet the new general manager, Joe and the new event planner, Felicia. Wednesday evening we have dinner at the Club where we spend some time talking with the "Berrywood" gang. Our good friends Pam and John Schuller meet us for dinner and we have a great time catching up on all the happenings in our lives during the past year. There is a new chef at the Club, Eric, and the meal is delicious. We also see Barbara and Greg Franklin, (Barb is looking great), Dave Perlman, Emory Quaskey, Paul Dolan, Dave Itzle and Jim Ferrari as it is the night of an Executive Board Meeting and all the officers and Directors are around. Later in the evening we run into Gary Bullis and Doug Slater.
We are also delighted to once again chat with our favorite bartender, Lisa, and to learn that the "Dirty Dave" (a delicious cocktail) is still available at the bar.
On Thursday evening, Dave and I have dinner at Bella Napoli with Stephen Rogers, a colleague of Dave's from BWI. It is a pleasant evening. Friday night is dinner at the Club again. It is much busier since it is the beginning of the weekend and many more people are around. We finally reconnect with Donna Newcomer and Arnold Hammann. We are so excited that they are getting married on July 4th. Congratulations! We have dinner with Donna and Arnold, Nancy and Jim Gorman, Pam and John Schuller, a two other couples. After dinner, we spend time catching up with other Club members, especially Barb and Pete Corkhill and Dutch and Teri Schaffer. It is so good to see everyone.
On Sunday, we meet Patrick and Robin Bradley at Reckless Rick's for lunch. We are so happy to see them. They fill us in on their latest adventures. Dave and I both take a "tumble" as the plastic chairs we are sitting in are on uneven sand and as soon as we lean backwards, we fall over.....Dave, first, then me! OOPS! Fortunately, neither of us is hurt. Before we left Maryland last June, Patrick and Robin gave us a wooden box with the following quote by Mark Twain:
Monday through Thursday is an endless chain of doctors appointments......dentist/hygienist...Dave needs a crown...ugh!...dermatologist, eye doctors, back to the dentist for Dave (twice more), primary care doctor, blood work......but by Thursday afternoon we are finished and are now appointment free for the rest of our journey. During these four days, we continue to catch up with more people. John and Pam have us over to their house for a delicious meatball and sausage dinner. The fresh Italian bread reminds us of our trip to Italy and the cannoli are divine! On Wednesday, we meet Laurie Rigg, Dave's secretary, for lunch at the Olive Grove restaurant. We have a wonderful time hearing all about her grandson Liam and seeing adorable pictures. We are sorry Howard is working and not able to join us.
On Thursday, after Dave gets his permanent crown, I go to Broadneck High School to visit with my former colleagues. It is so good to see everyone and to hear about the happenings. I meet Levi, the Italian teacher who replaced me, and I am able to visit his Italian II class, my Italian I students from last year. My former students are surprised and excited to see me. I spend a couple of hours visiting. I am able to see almost everyone from the department for a few minutes as well as my friend, Janice Oliva. I also visit with Dr. Smith, Pat Jones and Eileen Lemmon for a bit. Although, I love retirement, I do miss the friendships I formed during my five years at BHS. Thank you Karen Dickerson, my awesome department chair, for making this visit possible.
Thursday evening we meet Hamid Gazy and his wife Nahid at the Szechuan Cafe for dinner. Hamid is Dave's successor at BWI. Hamid is the consummate professional and during the five years that Dave worked with him, they enjoyed a relationship of trust and teamwork. Dave is so happy to have left his position in Hamid's very capable hands. It is a great opportunity to catch up on each others news. We hear about their recent trip to Iran as well as other happenings in their lives. We have a fabulous time. Hamid and Nahid are always such excellent company and we enjoy visiting with them whenever we have the opportunity.
