Still Pond, Georgetown Yacht Basin, Chesapeake City

Still Pond Dinghy Ride (With Hailey)
May 23, 2015

It's Saturday morning and we prepare the boat for departure from MYC.  We are going to Still Pond with Gary and Diane of "Believe A Bull" fame for an overnight raft-up.
"Believe A Bull" Headed into MYC
The afternoon is spent swimming (first of the season), having snacks and drinks aboard "At Last" and a delicious dinner of grilled portabello mushrooms, steak, and fresh tomato, basil and mozzarella salad.

We are up early and it is another beautiful day.  Gary, Diane, Dave and I take a dinghy ride and Hailey, too, around the pond.
To our delight, a bald eagle soars above us.  It is always such a majestic sight to see.  As we are headed back to the boats, Diane notices that the boats have drifted. We hurry aboard and after Gary gets his boat started (his batteries are dead) they decide to head back to MYC.  We anchor on our own while I prepare stuffed peppers for dinner and then we continue north to the Georgetown Yacht Basin where we will meet Myles Brager, his wife, Rosemarie, and her sister Diane.  The trip down the Sassafras River is very scenic.  There are lots of beautiful houses to see as well as a lot of boat traffic.  When we arrive, we take a mooring ball near Myles' boat "Amelia". Dave and I call the water taxi and go into the dock.  Tonya, the dock master, is excellent.  We walk around the area.  We stop at the Kitty Knight House restaurant where we have a bite to eat.  We have been here before, by car, for an MTOA rendez-vous, but never by boat. The outside terrace overlooks the basin and the view is great.

While eating, we receive a call that we need to move to another mooring ball.  It seems that at low tide all the boats do not swing in the same direction and we are too close to the catamaran next to us. Around sunset we join our friends on "Amelia" for a drink and then head back to our boat.

Today is Memorial Day and we decide to stay at GYB for another night.  We walk the docks, visit the store, and relax on the boat for the day.  Myles and his family leave in the late afternoon for their trip back to MYC.  We spend a quiet evening on the boat and get ready for our departure in the morning.

Container Ship on the C & D Canal

We leave GYB in the morning and our plan is to go to Chesapeake City on the C & D Canal for a few days.  We need to have some mail delivered and the weather forecast is "iffy " for the next few days. In the end, we end up staying on anchor in Chesapeake City for a week.  Our mail is slow, there is confusion concerning the fusion radio that we thought had been sent, and we lose the only good weather window, so we stay anchored in the basin outside of the Chesapeake Inn and Marina. During our stay, we visit the C & D Canal Museum where we learn about the construction of the canal.  The canal is 14 miles long, 450 feet wide and 35 feet deep across Maryland and Delaware, connecting the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay and the Port of Baltimore.  The C & D Canal is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  It has an interesting and varied history, but today, cargo ships of all sizes, tankers, container-carrying vessels, barges accompanied by tugboats, and countless recreational boats create a steady flow of traffic on the canal.  It was well-worth the visit to the museum.  While we are here, we swim, take dinghy rides, tour the town, and meet several other members of the AGLCA who are cruising.  On Sunday, we dinghy across the canal to Shaffers, another marina on the canal, for lunch.  We arrive by dinghy, but while we are having lunch, we watch a helicopter land right on a dock next to where we have our dinghy moored.
"Perfect Landing"
On Monday, we rent a car in order to grocery shop, do laundry, and explore the area.  The next few days are rainy with thunder and lightening storms.  We have almost 5 inches of rain.  The temperatures fall from almost 90 degrees to the 60s. After checking the weather, we decide that we will leave on Thursday and try to make our way to Cape May where we will stay until we find a weather window which will get us up the coast of New Jersey to the Hudson.  We make arrangements with Andy, the dock master at Chesapeake Inn and Marina, to get water and then we return to "At Last" to secure the dinghy on the upper deck and get the boat ready as we continue our journey north.
